Haft Sin Spread

A table set up during the Persian spring new year festival of Nowruz. In English Haft Sin literally means ‘7 S spread’ as in 7 items that begin with the Persian Letter ‘Sin’ Meanings for the table and the items meant to be on it are numerous and varied, most likely due to the holiday being so ancient that its meanings have shifted over time. Many people include more than seven items. Here is a basic list of items that might be present: garlic, grass, wheat paste known as samanoo, vinegar, sumac, coins, goldfish, mirror, candlesticks, water in a bowl, eggs, and hyacinth flower.
